The overall total World DRI production in 2010 topped more than 70.4 million tons and set a new record for the industry. According to 2010 data compiled, in the last four months of the year, world DRI out¬put averaged 105% of the prior best production rate (summer of 2008); meanwhile, the non-China blast furnace ironmaking industry continued to languish, operating at 85-90% of its prior best.

A cooperation under the leadership of Siemens VAI Metals Technologies GmbH, Austria, received a contract from JSW Projects Ltd., a group company of JSW Steel Ltd. (India's largest privately owned steel company), for the engineering and supply of a Corex gas-based MIDREX® direct-reduction (DR) dual-discharge plant. This new facility, which will have a nominal production capacity of approximately 1.2 million tons of hot and cold direct-reduced iron per year, will be erected at JSW Steel Ltd., located in Vijayanagar, Toranagallu, Karnataka State, India. The order value is a low three-digit million euro figure. Start-up of the new facility is scheduled for mid-2013.

MXCOL™ (pronounced “M X coal”) is the new name and trademark for the commercially proven MIDREX® Shaft Furnace technology using syn-gas from a coal source, or in other words the MIDREX® Process using coal as the primary energy source. This includes technology pairing with the MIDREX® Shaft Furnace previously termed “coal-gas” or “syn-gas” using coal, such as coke oven gas and includes COREX® offgas.

DRI Production Increases Slightly in 2008 Despite harsh economic conditions in the second half of 2008, world DRI production rose from to 68.5 million metric tons in 2008. The overall total production of DRI 2008 slightly exceeded the previous maximum of 67.2 million tons by about 2%. Growth was due in part to the ramping up to production of plants that started during 2007. Total production by all MIDREX® Direct Reduction Process plants was more than 39.8 million tons, making the technology the world’s leading technology for the 30th straight year. Second was the total of all coal-based processes was 17.6 million tons, the HYL/Energiron plants made 9.9 million tons and the other gas-based plant produced 1.1 million tons. Once again, India led all nations, making 21.2 million tons. The next five in order were Iran at 7.5 million tons, Venezuela at 6.9 million tons, Mexico at 6.0 million tons, Saudi Arabia at 5.0 million tons and Russia at 4.6 million tons.

World production of direct reduced iron (DRI) increased by 4 million metric tons in 2006, setting a new record of 59.8 million tons. This was an increase of 7% over the 2005 figure of 56.1 million tons. The MIDREX® Direct Reduction Process led world output with 35.8 million tons, or 60%.
