MIDREX® Direct Reduction Process
Direct reduction is the removal of oxygen from iron ore without melting. The MIDREX® Direct Reduction Process is the leading technology for converting iron ore into a high-purity direct reduced iron (DRI) product for use in steelmaking, ironmaking and foundry applications. The MIDREX® Process typically uses natural gas as the reductant and fuel, but also can use coal through gasification which is known as MXCOL™.
Since 1969, MIDREX® has built more than 70 Shaft Furnace Modules in 21 countries worldwide. Overcoming technical, commercial and geographical challenges, we take pride that our plants are able to perform at or above rated capacity in climates that range from the dry, sandy heat of Saudi Arabia to the frigid cold of Canada and Russia.
